Public Engagement Committee

The Public Engagement Committee consists of individuals from the Vancouver community who work in the environmental, social media, and consulting sectors. The committee provides support to the Generation Green Award’s social media strategy, and its members use their online and social media skills to provide individual mentorship to the Generation Green Awardees.

Michael Becker has been the Communications Director at United Way of the Lower Mainland for six years. He was previously the Manager Media Relations at BCIT. Prior to BCIT, Michael was the News Editor at the North Shore News for 15 years.

Lynda Gerty is a Program Director at Vantage Point, an organization that inspires and builds leadership in the voluntary sector. She is responsible for marketing and communications initiatives, directing the Next Leaders Network, and engaging people to build program and organizational capacity.

Raul Pacheco-Vega is a Vancouver-based researcher, educator and consultant in environmental politics and policy. He teaches in the Department of Political Science at UBC.

 

Minna Van started up the Network Hub in 2006 with two other partners. A start-up launch pad for new and upcoming entrepreneurs, The Network Hub establishes new companies as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible by offering a range of office support to over 20 companies in the lower mainland. Minna also donates her time to organize meet up events for entrepreneurs.

Amanda Mitchell is the City of Vancouver’s Greenest City Planning Analyst, and is committed to making Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020. She has managed the Greenest City online public consultation process and social media. She previously worked as the Smart Growth on the Ground Outreach Coordinator for Smart Growth BC and as a Researcher for the Design Centre for Sustainability.

Hilary Henegar is passionate about hyperlocal living and empowering individuals to make positive choices that benefit themselves, their communities and the planet. She is the former editor of Granville magazine, where she was nominated for three National Magazine Awards, among other accolades; digital editor of GardenWise magazine; managing editor of Pacific Yachting magazine; and associate editor of Western City magazine. Find her on her bike, in the garden, cooking with friends, dancing her face off or community organizing around Vancouver.

Christianne Wilhelmson is the Executive Director of the Georgia Strait Alliance. She leads GSA’s fundraising, government and media relations efforts as well as campaigns on protection of species at risk, better sewage treatment and marine planning. She also runs, cycles, swims, does yoga, kayaks, gardens and sails.

Ryan Kadowaki is the Senior Coordinator for the Climate Change and Clean Energy program at the David Suzuki Foundation. He is a graduate of the University of Victoria and will begin his Master’s in Environment and Management at Royal Roads University this fall. Ryan is also a presenter with The Climate Project Canada and delivers educational talks focused on climate solutions to the public.

Elijah van der Giessen is the Creative Services Lead Coordinator for the David Suzuki Foundation in Vancouver. Eli creates web projects at the Foundation and leads online outreach activities. Eli is actively involved in leveraging the power of new media to affect social change. He organizes the Net Tuesday a meetup group and helped organize of the 2010 Vancouver’s Change Camp conference.

George Hoberg is a Professor in the Department of Forest Resources Management at UBC.  He specializes in environmental and natural resource policy and governance. His current research is focused on BC electricity policy and environmental governance of the oil sands. He blogs at http://greenpolicyprof.org/wordpress

Rob Cottingham, Social Signal president, has worked with senior strategic levels of government, business and advocacy organizations to help them engage with audiences for 20 years – in both the digital and offline worlds. He maintains a long-running blog on technology and public affairs at RobCottingham.ca. He draws the popular Noise to Signal web cartoon, has been a regular freelance contributor to CBC Radio and performs in a variety of venues as a standup comic.

Erica Hargreave is the Founder and Creative Head of Ahimsa Media. She’s written for TV, magazines, books, the web and the education sector and worked as a creative producer for both TV and theater. She teaches Interactive Storytelling at BCIT and Capilano University.

Bob Kronbauer is one of Vancouver’s biggest fans. He’s the executive director of Vancouver Is Awesome Inc, a blog turned incorporated not-for-profit organization dedicated to the study, promotion and preservation of Vancouver arts and culture with a positive spin. He’s a modern day storyteller, a published fine art photographer and a curator. As a stakeholder in the continued “awesomeness” of Vancouver, Bob is honoured to be a part of the Green Generation advisory committee.
